    1. would it be possible to move the favourites icon to the root of the server (http://szdg.lpds.sztaki.hu/szdg/favicon.ico) as /favicon.ico is the standard location, and browsers like firefox will look there, and if the icon is present, will use it for all pages from that site

otherwise you have to add a <link> to every page specifying the custom location of your favicon (so the first option is much easier)

    2. the \"home\" link shouldn\'t point to /szdg/index.php for various reasons, i think using href=\"./\" will work better
that goes for the link at the bottom of every page as well, which, at the time of writing, is an absolute URL, again, using href=\"./\" should work better

    comments and questions welcome :)

Is that one of those little icons that appear next to the URL in the field at the top of a browser window, or in bookmarks & history lists? If so, it\'s not working for me, either here in Safari v1.3.2/Mac OS 10.3.9, or at home in Mozilla v1.2.1/Mac OS 9.1: I\'ve only seen the browsers\' generic icons associated with pages from this site, but the custom icons from SETI@home and Einstein@home do appear for me, on both systems.

          It is that icon, yes.

It has been inserted only in the HTML header on the front page, not into the template header for the BOINC generated pages.

So you should see it here with any graphical browser as it is really \"ico\", not a gif with a wrong extension (which would work in some browsers too, even animated ones can be used).

Yes, I see it on the homepage. I guess I\'ve been there very rarely since the navigation bar appeared.

hence why i suggested for #1 that the file be moved, so that such changes wouldn\'t need to be made :) (and i assume they\'d need to be made everytime you upgraded the server code, unless the berkeley devs have done something clever)

...it is really \"ico\", not a gif with a wrong extension (which would work in some browsers too, even animated ones can be used).
well, it\'s ment to be a 16x16 bitmap image, using 16 colours, with an .ico extension
              that\'s the standard anyway
animated gifs (gifs of any kind infact) shouldn\'t be used, because the browser is expecting a bitmap

                Lee,

                your #1 request is done
                great stuff :)
however the icon file is, unfortunetly, in the wrong place, it needs to be in the server root, so that you end up with http://szdg.lpds.sztaki.hu/favicon.ico, it\'s currently in the /szdg/ folder
the only reason it works on the front page is because you\'ve updated the <link>
so still have the link, after you\'ve moved the file to the root, change the href for the link to: href=\"/favicon.ico\", which will have the desired effect for non-clever browsers (like IE)

                #2 is partly done...
if you\'re able to commit changes to the CVS it would be advantageus to have the href=\"./\" change added, i would have done it myself, but i don\'t have commit premissions :(
don\'t forget the \"home\" link in the header at the top of each page, i see you\'ve done quite a few of the \"Return to SZTAKI Desktop Grid main page\" links at the bottom thou, but i think most people will use the nice fancy one at the top more often ;)
oh, by the way, i\'ve make a thread at BURP to notify janus of the problem too, incase you don\'t have commit permissions, and just so he knows about it :)

putting a robots.txt file in the root would also be helpful (the root, not the /szdg/ folder, robots generally only look in the root for the robots.txt file)

                  it should contain the following:

                  # this file should be placed in the root of the web server (http://www.projectURL.tld/robots.txt), not in the project sub-folder (if you use a subfolder)

                  User-agent: *
                  Disallow: /szdg/account
                  Disallow: /szdg/add_venue
                  Disallow: /szdg/am_
                  Disallow: /szdg/bug_report
                  Disallow: /szdg/edit_
                  Disallow: /szdg/host_
                  Disallow: /szdg/prefs_
                  Disallow: /szdg/result
                  Disallow: /szdg/team
                  Disallow: /szdg/workunit
                  Disallow: /szdg/ops/

                  # the following line informs the fasterfox extension for the firefox browser to not make any \"prefectching\" requests for this site, to reduce server-load and bandwidth
                  User-agent: Fasterfox
                  Disallow: /

the firefox rule needs to be \"/\" because it looks for those 2 exact lines, and i think it won\'t work if you use \"/szdg/\"

if it\'s just the szdg folder, you could set up apache to return a HTTP 403 when a request asks for something in the /szdg/ folder (request uri/url contains \"/szdg/\")and contains the following header:

                  X-Moz: prefetch

                    Lee,

thanks for your notes. I wasn\'t really in this topic, but I\'ve crawled a little after robots & icons and now I think it will work...

As with the homepage link...that\'s not so trivial to change, so that has been delayed for a while...

...and I don\'t have commit permission either to the cvs...yet...

good to know, thanks for the update :)

the icon seems to be working correctly now, but is the blue background intentional, if it\'s not i\'d be happy to have a go at tweaking it to have a transparent background (or rather, seeing how well it\'s supported by browsers :p)

The idea for the blue background came from this one :

Transparent would be possible too of course

fair enough, if it\'s intentional then fine :)

i just wans\'t sure if it was actually intentional or not
