    Hello everybody ;o)

I\'m Nuxi@ from France and LeFreenaute Team.

Actually, I\'ve got seven results pending since the 17th of september, representing 1,049.18 credits ... and nothing\'s moving to granted credits since that date.

Can somebody tell me what\'s happening ?

    Thank\'s a lot.

      Hi,
Here, the quorum = 3 so if the quorum is not reached, no wu can be valided and get credits.
Your computers are hidden so we can\'t say more about your wus.

Credit comes slowly here these days; the unpredictable crunch times and a buggy Windows version (which has now been replaced) have combined to produce a high error rate, many late results, and long delays before replacement work is sent out. I have over 3000 pending myself …

Did you start a competition for pending credits? OK, I join, and I\'m the winner: 22,999.52 for 83 WUs.

As credit granting needs often many weeks in this project, couldn\'t this be a way to attract new members? \"Join Sztaki, the only Boinc project where participants race for pending credits!\"

JFTR my precise current total is 3,427.99 CS for 19 WUs. But considering the outcomes of other results that have reached quorum, I don’t expect to be granted more than about a thousand.

As i also have some credits pending, can someone explain to me what \"quorum\" means in this context? User nightbird mentioned it in his reply to Nuxis first post in this thread.

                      Thank you!

Every work unit must be processed by at least 3 different users, who must report 3 identical results. Only then can the project owners know that the result is correct. This is to prevent the mathematicians from carrying out their research on the basis of wrong results. Wrong results could be reported because of hardware failure, software bugs, cheating users, sabotage, etc.

Only when 3 identical results are sent in, we can say that the quorum of 3 is met. Until this happens, the users must wait to have their credits granted, which are called until then \"pending credits\".

Look at http://szdg.lpds.sztaki.hu/szdg/workunit.php?wuid=21173. 2 of 3 seems to be enough to validate. If you look at the stderr of the results it even seems a bit funny which results are valid.

                            Hello all!

I have obtained 0 credit for a number of WUs completed on my Mac PowerPC dual 1GHz machine, running OS X 10.4.8.

In all cases, my result was invalid, and the results for the other two machines were valid. If the quorum is three, why isn\'t another copy sent out? Or do you only have to have 2 out of three agreeing?

                            1. There are far too many invalid results on the Mac, and this suggests that there are problems with the application being used on it. Other results in the past have suggested the same thing.

                            2. The compute time on the Mac is way over the top compared to Intel machines, and this suggests that no optmisation is being performed, compared to that on Intel Machines. Since in general an equivalent PowerPC outperforms an Intel machine on both integer and floating point tests, there has to be a big problem here. Are Mac software development tools being used? Are the optimiser flags being turned on in the compiler?

How about a concerted effort to bring the Mac application up to spec? I resent the inherent discrimination in the way that the development and result resources are shared out. Presumably the core of the algorithm uses the same C or C++ code on either machine, so what is the problem?

                            WU ids are 32620, 34427, 17959, 37149, 37989

The project has very limited resources; I gather Ádám has to borrow someone else’s Mac whenever he wants to compile a new version of the app.

Bear in mind also that fewer than 3% of the hosts attached to this project are Macs; most BOINC projects don’t provide an app for Mac OS at all, and overall Macs represent fewer than 5% of the systems running BOINC. I as well would like to see my Macs achieving more of their potential here, but I don’t realistically expect such development to have a very high priority.

How about a concerted effort to bring the Mac application up to spec? I resent the inherent discrimination in the way that the development and result resources are shared out. Presumably the core of the algorithm uses the same C or C++ code on either machine, so what is the problem?

The project has very limited resources; I gather Ádám has to borrow someone else’s Mac whenever he wants to compile a new version of the app.

Bear in mind also that fewer than 3% of the hosts attached to this project are Macs; most BOINC projects don’t provide an app for Mac OS at all, and overall Macs represent fewer than 5% of the systems running BOINC. I as well would like to see my Macs achieving more of their potential here, but I don’t realistically expect such development to have a very high priority.

The Mac port is Attila\'project and he did it on his spare time.
According what he explained to me :
                                        - the application has to run on G3/G4/G5 and MacOsX
                                        - if he can optimize for the G5, he can\'t try it since he has no G5
                                        - compiling for the Intel/mac would be in theory possible but again no possible to try it
                                        - atm, he doesn\'t want to generate others problems

I made a comment on another thread (Mac/Intel, Message Id 4960) about lack of Mac support before reading this thread, so it needs to be taken out of context from this reply.

I am pretty rusty with porting software and software development, as I haven\'t done any for many years. However, I have all the development tools on my G4 machine, including cross compilers for the new Intels. I might be able to devote some time to a new port in the New Year, especially if Attila was able to make his project files available to me, for me to make a quick start. I would also like to see any updates for other machines to check for any optimisation code that might be incorporated into newer Macs.

At the moment, I have no means of executing code for an Intel Mac, although I might be able to get access to one of my son\'s machines for a few hours at a time when I am in Canberra (twice a week).

Attila can try to cross compile for intel and compile a G5 optimized version.
                                                  I sent him a reminder.

Right. I eagerly await a new correct version, one whose results agree with those of Wintel boxes. If it runs lots faster that would really be nice.

Each of the 3 results from wuid=55761 indicates \"Checked, but no consensus yet\" - so obviously, the results do not agree. I would also note that the stderr_txt of two of the results have \"Restarting from checkpoint\" messages. Therefore, I would suspect problems related to checkpointing (as described in this thread and others).
