CPU time limit exceeded:
what a frustration having spent more than 350 hours of CPU time on two WU\'s and not getting any results.

I\'m going to guess that you also had the problem I spotted, as when I look at your results they show less than 5000 seconds of (combined) CPU time.

Two hours ago, after 140+ hours of computation, this task gave the following message:
21/09/2008 08:29:37|SZTAKI Desktop Grid|Aborting task 37ab002f-ee81-4a23-853c-cbed64362d16_17b47bf7-0cca-4f15-985f-1fc72bc82dae_7597_0: exceeded CPU time limit 503486.258965
I spotted it before it uploaded and noted that, for some unknown reason, the \'CPU Time\' displayed had dropped from over 140 hours to 46:15:40!!

I\'m going to set this project to NNW for a while as it doesn\'t seem likely that anyone is going to have any success with the work currently available.

[Edit]Unsurprisingly, the second task has now done the exact same thing. :(

Can anyone explain why the cpu time is being reduced upon error?[/edit]

I edited my client_state file to increase the values of <rsc_fpops_est> and <rsc_fpops_bound> for the result I have in progress. And I think it helped. After some trial and error, I wound up with a value of <rsc_fpops_est> that was about 40 times its original value. After the change, my \"CPU time\" + \"To completion\" time is now pretty close to agreeing with the total time projected by the \"Progress\" meter. I also increased <rsc_fpops_bound> by a similar amount (and it\'s probably higher now than necessary).

I had made adjustments like these (with help) on SETI Beta several months ago when Astropulse units were having similar problems. And it worked there. So it may be worth a try here. Just make sure you have made a back-up copy of your BOINC folder before starting. And shut BOINC down while you are editing.

I wondered about doing something similar - and then realised that unless at least two other people do it with the same work unit I\'ll just end up with the only finished copy and still get nothing for it!

Are you telling me these work units are going to bomb out after 94.5 hours (~340k seconds) regardless? I\'ve got two running which are going to take closer to 250 hours to complete as they are...

Once the results deleted, you will be able to delete the host.

But that could take a year or so. :)

I have a host from mid-, late-January and early February that I have been unable to merge (212319, 211975 & 239245) and still can\'t delete due to attached results!

Just thought I\'d bump this thread to see if any decision has been made by the project admin.

As I recall, there were quite a few who fell foul of the time-limit and (I guess) have lost a lot of time/credit that they\'d like to see recognition of. I know I would.

Hi.

I\'ve crunched a fair amount of w/u lately but I currently have this one which has run for about six hours and reached 36%. So far so good.

It was pre-empted by another program (as happens) and now whenever BOINC gives it time the search_2.02_windows_intelx86.exe is started (and appears in the task manager) but uses no cpu power. The manager also sits there recording no time elapse.

I have tried manually suspending/resuming the wu and also exiting/restarting BOINC but nothing seems to change.

Does anyone have any idea what else I can do to rescue this as I would rather not lose the effort - I\'ve already lost ~300 hours in two/three other wu failing and received nothing for them.

I seem to have a problem. I have been running my first work unit fo 66 plus hours. The time to completion keeps increasingm and it has been at 50% complete for an extremely long time. The workunit starts with 21b342bd-. Any ideas as to what is going on and how to resolve it?

See this post for what happened to me with a similar work unit. That said, I have also completed some of these successfully. Don\'t worry too much about sticking at fifty, it\'ll jump to 100 if it completes in time.

I\'m hoping there is some system in place to allow recompense for lost time/credits for impossible work units..

Yesterday, I returned this work unit which bombed at 206hours. I left it running as it is a two liner (I think) that went to 50% at about 80h and I thought it would be okay. Next time I check the computer, I have a cpu time exceeded message. :(

I also had this wu at ~84h and 20%, which I have now aborted as it obviously wouldn\'t finish in time.

Is there any form of recompense for the ~300hours/~1600credits of lost time?

On a happier note, I have completed this one which gives a quorom; as long as the results agree. :)

Is this the correct place to post this? I don\'t know but I\'m sure some helpful cruncher can tell me.

I just returned this wu which bombed at 206hours. I left it running as it is a two liner (I think) that went to 50% at about 80h and I thought it would be okay. Next time I check the computer, I have a cpu time exceeded message. :(

I also have this wu at ~84h and 20% (which unsurprisingly no-one has successfully returned) and a final one at 60% after ~56h, both due back a week ago.

So that looks like ~340hours of cpu time wasted, not to mention the circa 1900 credits that the time is worth. For the moment I\'ll leave the final one running as it has a vague hope of finishing but I don\'t know what to do about the middle one. I don\'t like to write off nearly a hundred hours but it looks like continuing will just mean writing off another two hundred. :(
