1) Message boards : SZTAKI Desktop Grid : How to crunch Sztaki easier, tips and hints... (Message 6233)

If only this were posted on the home page of the project I might have not wasted
242,042.58 CPU time (sec) for a granted credit of 0.00 on Computer 267105 for Result ID 809118 for WU ID 181264 I mean who would rationally crunch so long for a result that will be no good and will not validate? ...

But this info is not on the home page so ... oh well ...

Here are some tips that a user can do to give their WUs the best chance for valid results:

  • Set general prefs Leave applications in memory while preempted? to YES.
  • Do not exit BOINC if possible. That means running your hosts 24/7 and, sorry, no more daily reboots.
  • If you feel that the % complete is stuck - don\'t worry, just look at CPU time for reassurance that the WU is still going. The % complete is representative of the # of lines completed (e.g. a 5-line WU will jump from 0% to 20% when the first line is complete, then to 40% upon completion of the second line, and so on. A 1-line WU will only jump to 100% complete when it is actually done. Keep in mind that each line will take a totally different amount of time to complete)
  • Ignore the \"To completion\" time, it\'s irrelevant due to the nature of the algorithm used in the application.
  • If you are still nervous about a WU even if the CPU time is still counting, abort it. If you stop BOINC and restart to get the WU going again, the result will be no good and will not validate and you won\'t get credit for it anyway. Although I do encourage you to stay with it (it may take 100+ hours), but if you aren\'t comfortable with it, then don\'t bother. Worst case for staying with it = Max CPU time error.
  • Be patient.
  • Expect to lose some credit due to WUs getting too many success/total/error results. (the too many success or total results happens when hosts produce successful yet invalid results, usually {but not always} by stopping/restarting BOINC. By aborting it produces an error result.)

Hope this helps some people that are feeling a bit uneasy with this project. Happy Crunching!

Thank you very much for your reply ... my apologies for any of my annoyance with life that came venting here ... I shall refrain from further whining ;)

Is there some mysterious way to merge hosts of which I\'m unaware?

No, there isn\'t...

I am really not terribly concerned with the credits themselves, but my logic/math hemisphere is screaming that the fact that the user totals do not add up to the sum of the hosts is a symptom of some other error ... I only wish for a reply regards the discrepancy ... in fact, if my host credit was reduced to match my user credit, I might feel some small disappointment, but I would feel even greater relief at the equation being balanced.

This is the cause of manual credit granting...which should not be the case, because the tests showed that the manual granting queries are correct...but hey, this is life and it can produce unpredicted things. After I\'ve fixed the validator, I\'ll balance the equation :)

5) Message boards : SZTAKI Desktop Grid : bug in the reporting / host management functions? (Message 6045)

My account shows User Ironheart
with Total credit 177.59
and two hosts which are actually the same machine:
267105 and 254849 (a renaming occurred for internal networking purposes).
All attempts to merge the old name host computer into the new name host computer via the merge computers function on SZTAKI have been futile, because no hosts show up there at all.
Even more mysterious is the new number system mathematics occurring which shows host 254849 as having earned credit of 213.57 a variance of 35.98 in excess of the user account to whom the host belongs (or rather the user account is 35.98 short of the credits earned by one of its two hosts).
It may seem like an insignificant detail, but it makes me wonder regarding the programming related to the project \"per se\".

Still unable to merge hosts ... actually the same machine that was renamed for internal network purposes

254849 ====> 267105

Also seems to be some discrepancy in reporting credit granted for user Ironheart 177.59 while host 25489 is showing 213.57

None of this is especially important to me, but it might represent some bug in reporting software.

Aloha!

Once more .... very confused ... the task suggests a \"to completion\" time of \"01:15:00\" yet I see another completion of the task listed at 128,000 + seconds ... which would yield something of a \"to completion\" time of 35:55:55 +

Why does the task suggest an amount of time \"to completion\" that is completely unrealistic even if I leave it running uninterupted?

Also, is it correct that if my computer restarts during a WU
that the WU will fail in some way?

There is a problem with the checkpointing system. If there were no checkpoints, a WU would restart from scratch, which is annoying but acceptable if you know about it.

Here there are checkpoints, but they don\'t work properly. They make you believe that everything is OK, but it isn\'t. The program jumps some processing and delivers a result that is considered by Boinc as being successful. But when 3 \"successful\" results have been sent in, the validator notices that the interrupted WUs are often incomplete or wrong and they fail.

If something is missing, the system will qualify a 1-liner WU as being empty, the many-liners are not empty but nevertheless not correct.

Sometimes, restarting a WU doesn\'t cause any trouble, it depends on where in the program it just was. As far as I know, the programmers don\'t know themselves where the problem exactly occurs. So you are strongly advised not to interrupt a WU. You can switch between different projects if you leave Sztaki in memory. My fuse, my Windows and my travel requirements don\'t allow me always to crunch 24/7, so I had to suspend downloading new WUs :-((

Thank you robert ... Power interruptions are what suggest to me that I should also stop d/l\'ing new WU\'s for a bit until the matter is sorted out for the good of the project. My time wasted isn\'t an issue for me, but if I\'m not actually crunching valid results for SZTAKI then I suspect I may be delaying the project progress more than contributing.

I look forward to accepting new when either the bug is fixed or I have a more dedicated platform.

Ni!

Also .. if a task has been running for 1:23:40 CPU time and shows O.OOO% progress, is this of concern?
Perhaps I should detach for the good of the project?

Wondering if you might merge my old host name into my new host name
254849 -----> 267105

Might also apply to host CPID ...
only one machine in use the whole time for
user CPID 231fc2dec94497f376810c05fe33c352

Also, is it correct that if my computer restarts during a WU
that the WU will fail in some way?
